Perched on the edge of the High Atlas Mountains, Aït Ben Haddou is one of Morocco’s most photographed and iconic landmarks. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a ksar, or fortified village, made of earthen clay buildings stacked along a hill above the Ounila River.
Walking through Aït Ben Haddou feels like stepping onto a movie set—and for good reason. This stunning village has been featured in blockbusters like Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and The Mummy. Its timeless appearance and preserved architecture make it one of the finest examples of traditional Moroccan construction.
Climb to the top of the village for panoramic views of the valley and surrounding desert terrain. Each layer of the ksar reveals narrow alleys, communal granaries, and dwellings that have stood for centuries, weathering the harsh desert sun and rare but powerful rainstorms.
While many residents have relocated to the more modern village across the river, some still live within the ksar, offering a glimpse into a lifestyle that’s slowly fading. Aït Ben Haddou is also a common stop on the Marrakech-to-Merzouga route, making it a perfect cultural detour en route to the Sahara.
