Often overshadowed by its larger neighbors, Meknes is a hidden gem among Morocco’s imperial cities. Once the capital under the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, Meknes is a city of grand ambition, royal heritage, and stunning architecture.

The city’s most iconic landmark is Bab Mansour, one of the most beautiful gates in all of Morocco. Built with green zellige tiles and marble columns, it leads into the vibrant El Hedim Square. Inside the medina, you’ll find a more tranquil and authentic vibe compared to Marrakech or Fes.

Explore the Royal Stables and Granaries of Heri es-Souani, designed to house thousands of horses and store grain for the entire population. The sheer scale of these ruins reflects the might and vision of Moulay Ismail’s reign. The nearby Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail is a sacred site open to non-Muslim visitors and showcases refined Islamic architecture.

A trip to Meknes is often combined with a visit to Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco, and Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, a picturesque holy town. Together, they offer a full immersion into the diverse historical layers that define northern Morocco.
